Purpose: Recogito is a tool that makes it easy to associate biblical places with records in academic databases of ancient places. Starting with a file from openbible.info/geo, we can expand what we know about these places and plot more detailed geographic information.

Steps:

  1. Sign up for a free Recogito account here: http://recogito.pelagios.org/
  2. Send your Recogito username to [email protected] to be added as a collaborator
  3. Log in to edit this document: http://recogito.pelagios.org/document/jg8r4fqzstc2zl
  4. Find a place in the list that is not already tagged as yellow or green, then follow these steps:
    1. Click the box on the far left of the row.
    2. Click "change" or "search" to see a map and list of all locations that match the name of that biblical place.
    3. Compare the results from your search to that same location at http://www.openbible.info/geo/atlas/.
      1. If it is somewhat close to the same location, click the placemark and click the matching result from "Pleiades." Then, click "OK." If no Pleiades matches exist, use your best judgement for tagging the closest match.
      2. If no places are closely related to the OpenBible result, click "Flag this Place." Try looking up different spellings or alternate names for that place before tagging it as "unidentifable." Feel free to use other reference materials to identify locations that match the Pleiades database.
      3. After you've evaluated the matching places, click "OK" to save the result.
      4. If you are unsure of something or need to add clarification, add notes in the comment section for that place.

Quality Control:

Places tagged by volunteers are not automatically added to the main database. We will evaluate any changes made since the last data import and will reach out with any questions. Use your informed judgement to identify places with the understanding that all of these are a "best guess" effort and will not become publicly available without additional review.
